Extreme Temperature Diary- Tuesday June 23rd, 2020/ Main Topic: More Eye Opening Hot Spots Appearing On The Planet This Week

Tuesday June 23rd… Dear Diary. The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉

Main Topic: More Eye Opening Hot Spots Appearing On The Planet This Week

Dear Diary: There are other hot spots besides the Siberian and northern New England heat waves from last week that have developed or will be developing this week that need to be pointed out.

At 500 millibars we now have a “three wave pattern” spiking temperatures at high latitudes:

We dealt at length with the Siberian heat wave on Sunday. The other two are in the process of building this week.

First, our Scandinavian heat wave should set many records:

Here is the latest GFS model guidance for Europe showing that the ridge in Scandinavia should peak on Thursday:

These 500 millibar heights well above 588 decameters are much warmer in Scandinavia than any I saw working at the Weather Channel from 1983-2014. I’ll report records from the surface in the Scandinavian countries as we move into the late week period.

The third wave crest forming astoundingly high 500 millibar heights should be occurring around Hudson Bay in Ontario Canada:

This Canadian ridge should not peak until Tuesday of next week and may actually aid in limiting lower 48 state heat if a few cold pockets get trapped to its south.

I did note from Etienne Kapikian that in the Southern Hemisphere monthly records are being set at several sites:

We will see what transpires with many more reports getting added to this blog through the next several weeks.

Here is more climate and weather news from Tuesday:

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)

Now here are some of today’s articles and notes on the horrid COVID-19 pandemic:
